Hopefully this is an easy one…but I’m a little confused about it…anyhow.

If I export video as a quicktime.mov from Avid with the Avid Meridien Codec Umcompressed Lossless, does this mean that I am not compressing the video? How bad is the generation loss if the video was captured at 2:1? Will I encounter any generation loss if I were to import this mov file to use in a different Avid timeline or in After Effects?

It seems like just exporting the file as an .mov should create different video than the original OMF file…?!?

Any answers on this are greatly appreciated?

(I’m working on Avid Mediacomposer Meridien and AvidXpress Pro)

The best way to work with QT in AE is to use a quicktime reference. Unfortunately, AE has to have access to the OMFI files, either on the same machine or through a network of some kind (and I’m not sure that would work). You still have to render a QT out of AE, but you’re using the original OMFI file to create the composite.

IMO, ‘generational loss’ of the workflow you describe is negligible. I use 2:1 exclusively for broadcast. I’ve never had a problem exporting, compositing and importing back to the Avid – As a matter of fact, I’ve exported 2:1 video into AE, rendered back out at 2:1 (Meridian codec) and imported the file into AXPro 1:1 for playback (kind of like a DDR for live-to-tape ops) and the files looked great.
