  • Avid Media Composer v.3.0.5 start up error

We recently updated from Media Composer v3.0 to v3.0.5 on two systems. Both run on WinXP Pro SP2. One is a Mojo SDI system. One is software only. Now, on both systems, when we launch Media Composer, we see an error message:

“An access violation has occurred. See error log:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Documents\Avid Media Composer\AvidFatalErrorReports\Exception_2008.11.14_14.33.34.”

The error report shows “Fault Module C:\Windows\System32\MSVCR71.dll”

If we click OK in the error message window, Media Composer continues to load normally, and seems to function normally. Still, this may indicate some unseen problem, and I’d like to fix it. There is no mention on Avid’s knowledge base or forums. We tend to think it’s an Avid problem, because it occurs on two separate systems, both with and without Mojo SDI, and it occured on both immediately after we installed v3.0.5. Any information or suggestions will be appreciated.

Did you do an uninstall first before the 3.0.5 upgrade? I would do that than reinstall and see what happens.

Follow the install directions carefully. If you are upgrading from a 2.X version, there is stuff you have to uninstall manually before you start the new install. Also some registry editing.

Thanks for the suggestions, but as it happens we had already uninstalled all earlier versions and all the supporting files, per the release notes from Avid. We still have the problem
