  • Avid Media Composer not able to import Sony BPAV files

Posted by Philip Coccioletti on July 18, 2024 at 10:15 pm

I have the most recent Avid Media Composer subscription with the newest software that I pay monthly for. Why am I having such trouble importing Sony camera BPAV files that I can easily import on older versions of Avid Media Composer? I have to actually convert all these camera files in Wondershare software then import into Avid. My friends with Premier laugh at this work flow I have to jump through just to import these files. Why ? why ? Why?

    Hey Philip,

Yes, Avid still has a lot of catching up to do. Hopefully, the new management will make it happen for them.

Have you got the free Sony codec plugin for Avid?
    https://nablet.com/plugins
Don’t know if your codec is hiding in there, but worth a try.

More details here on Avid site:

    Hi Mads,

Thanks for the info. Got confused and tried to select a file from Sony that you sent and still not working on my source browser in Avid MC. Can you help me with sending me the link you think will solve this issue. Talking to Avid is like contacting the pope. lol

    Thanks brother.

    Hey Philip,

Yes, simple things should be easy to do.

Do you know the camera model where your SONY BPAV files originate from?
And, are you Mac or PC based?

That will help me trying to narrow down a solution (link) for you.

    Hey Philip,

That helped – but comes without any promises.

    Try this link at NABLET:
    https://nablet.com/xavc-xdcam-ama-plugin

If that doesn’t work, it appears that you can get an older version here:

    https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/software/00251398

In the small print it states:

    Applicable Model

This information is for the following models:

This AMA plug-in provides support for XAVC and XDCAM / XDCAM EX files in Avid Media Composer, Symphony and NewsCutter products, allowing viewing and editing capability.

    Note
Development of Sony AMA plug-in has been handed over from Sony Corporation to nablet GmbH.

You can download the latest version from nablet’s website.

    • Version 3.51: For use with Avid Media Composer v7.0.6/v8.3.1/v8.4/8.5/8.6, and Avid NewsCutter (Windows) v11.0.4 and v11.0.4.4.
    • Version 3.32: For use with Avid Media Composer v7.0.4/v8.1/v8.2.
    • Version 2.4: Media Composer 6.5, Symphony 6.5

Please, please do let us know it works, as there will be other AVID users looking for a solution to the same problem.

    Have fun!
