Avid Media Composer and Express Pro…What hard drives?

June 23, 2006 at 8:51 pmOK…I have experience with the old school Avids…Media Composer Meridians are the last models I worked with, and STILL work on. And of course they are full on systems with the Avid cards and Avid drives or Unity. I also use FCP…but that is just an aside.
I have the possibility to get the new Avid Media Composer software or Express Pro HD software and I am looking at both. Leaning towards the Media Composer software. ANYWAY…on the Avid product pages they say nothing about what kind of drives these products work with..what interface and all that. Can I use my G-Raids that I have for my FCP setup? Can I use my internal SATA Raid with my Sonnet 4+4 SATA card? Or do I need to get an ultra SCSI 2 card and Avid drives?
Thanks guys.

June 24, 2006 at 3:47 pmIf you have a MAC G5, or a HP xw8000 or xw8200 (not the Compaq), you can ABSOLUTELY use your Sonnet Tempo SATA card to do 1:1 uncompressed video !!!
You MUST use FOUR (4) drives stripped RAID 0 (with Apple Disk Utility, or Windows Disk Manager). It ABSOLUTELY works. If you are on the HP PC – put it in slot 4 or 5 – both work. Two drives are not fast enough to do uncompressed video. This solution will NOT work with a PC Meridian product on Compaq computers, and it will not work on MAC G4’s with Meridian card set.

June 24, 2006 at 7:50 pmPerfect. I have that card and (4) Hitachi 500GB drives internally on my G5 (jammed in there) for a 2TB RAID.
Thanks Bob.

be a big shot, and get yourself an external Firmtek 4 bay SATA chassis – this will work perfectly with your Sonnet card – it is silent, and you will eliminate all potential heat problems with your G5.Bob Zelin

June 25, 2006 at 4:34 amOn my list Bob. I have just spent so much money on other things that just getting the card and drives and $35 worth of cabling was a quick way of getting my RAID.
Thanks.
