Hi, I’ve been learning Avid at my school for some time now and I’m always trying to solve problems by browsing the net (and there have been many). However, I cannot find a solution or explanation to a problem I’m having now so I decided to ask here.

A friend of mine asked me if I can find a way to make Blackmagic codec work with Quicktime and Avid Media Composer. I’ve read that Avid doesn’t work with Blackmagic deck, but what about the codec itself? The friend I mentioned is a professional and he claims he has seen the codec work in an advertising company, and we don’t know how they managed to make it work. In our case Avid just doesn’t recognize the file.

If you think it’s impossible there is the second problem – how to play a file encoded with Blackmagic on a PC? I’ve got two mov files: one is prores encoded, the second is blackmagic 10bit encoded. The prores one plays fine but the second one causes Quicktime 7.6 to display this message:

“Error -2048: Couldn’t open the file test_bm_10bit.mov because it is not a file that QuickTime understands.”

We have the codec installed, I’ve tried with some other applications, but still no success. Any ideas how to solve any of the above problems?

    Thanks for any help.

All you need to do is go to Blackmagics site & download there stand alone codec, install on you avid and import the file into avid. It will convert you BM codec QT into Avid media. Do some tests with a short peice of footage to get your settings right.

Thanks for your response, but it still doesn’t solve my problem. I thought that maybe my codec is out of date or different that the one used in the video (but it shouldn’t be, I got the clip and the codec together, on a DVD), but even if I wanted to download a new/different one, as you suggested, I cannot do it. I just cannot find it on Blackmagic website, I’ve found some old links on different forums but they lead to nowhere. I’m computer literate so I don’t know if it’s me or if the codecs are just not there.

The one I have is “Blackmagic_Codecs_v4.9.msi” but it doesn’t help, both Quicktime and Avid don’t know what the file “test_bm_10bit.mov” is.

    Any more help, please?

    Cheers.

Sounds like the file is corrupt rather than it being a codec issue. Quicktime generally opens files for which it has no codec. It just displays the picture as all white or all black. Try with a new file.
