    Hi guys,

I’m on a station currently using Media Composer 5 and have been editing with little trouble until this morning when I had difficulty with some P2 media refusing to import. Someone suggested deleting the ‘msmFMID’ and ‘msmMMOB’ files from the Avid MediaFiles folder so Avid would be forced to rebuild them. I made a back-up of these files just in case.

Upon launch, Avid would scan the MediaFiles but will always freeze when the loading bar reaches the end and has ‘completed’. This would completely lock up my system and I’m forced to do a physical reboot. I’ve tried to copy and paste the files back into the folder, but the same thing occurs.

I’ve got the project on my C: drive and the MediaFiles on an external hard-drive. I can open other Avid projects on other hard-drives with no fuss, just not this one.

I’m running on Windows XP – Service Pack 3, although the hard-drive is Mac formatted (how it was delivered to me). I’m currently using MacDrive 7 to access the drive and hadn’t had any problems until now.

I’ve got a deadline rapidly approaching and have been pulling my hair out, as I can’t seem to find a solution. If anyone is able to help, I would be thankful!

Look in the numbered folders in the MXF folder. Do any of those folders have more than 5000 files? If so, Avid MC can have trouble building the database to manage that many files. If you do, then make another numbered folder…”2,” or “3”…and drag some of the MXF files into that one, so that you get under 5000 in the folder.

    Divide and conquer.

    – Take all mediafiles out of the MXF folder.
    – Launch MC. Everything works? Quit the application.
    – Add a bunch of media (not too many files) back into the right folder
    – Relaunch MC. Everything cool? If so, quit and add some more media, and relaunch.
    – etc.

Rebuilding databases eats RAM like there’s no tomorrow. If you do it in smaller steps and relaunch, you avoid RAM issues.

Also, Shane is very right: make sure the /1 /2 /3 folders don’t contain more than 5000 files.
