AVID MC on Mac Mini
Posted by Robinbuday on November 28, 2007 at 6:24 amI am going to purchase Avid Media Composer soon and I am going to attempt to install it on my Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz machine with 2GB RAM under OSX Tiger 10.4.10. I’ve been told that the graphics card in my machine will probably not work with the program (it’s only 64MB) but I imagine it would run fine considering FCP runs perfectly well. Would I be wrong in assuming this? Does anybody have any experience with Avid MC on the Mini?

Yes. You would be wrong in assuming anything about the relationship between demands placed on your system by these two programs.

November 28, 2007 at 6:11 pmThe most comparable system on Avid’s compatibility listing on their website would be the iMac with the same processor, but it required an Ati Radeon x1600 video card at 128MB. I don’t know about the upgradability of the Mac Mini, but without that video card, it’s highly doubtful if the the program would run at all. That’s a bet that I wouldn’t take.

November 29, 2007 at 12:01 amReally? Does the Media Composer really require that much power? I mean I’m not editing any uncompressed material or anything. I could see maybe some more advanced effects filters not being operational and maybe the lack of some real time effects but not run at all? Geez. I’m gonna try anyway. If it doesn’t work I have 14 days to take the computer back and spend a little more on the iMac equivalent. I’ll report my results here.

November 29, 2007 at 3:21 amAn update:
I did a little research* about the GMA 950 card that ships with the Mac Mini. Apparently because the memory on the graphics card is shared with the main memory it will automatically allocate more RAM to the video card if the software running requires it. The amount of this allocation is reflective of the amount of memory you have in the computer. Because my Mini will have 2GB of RAM, it can allocate up to 256MB on the graphics card. Pretty neat stuff. I’m interested to see how this works out.

December 13, 2007 at 8:55 amJust got Media Composer up and running today. It works just fine so far. I’m going to play with some HD material later and let you know how it goes.

November 29, 2008 at 1:08 amHey robin!
How did it work out with media composer on mini mac, in the end?
I’m planning to buy a mini mac and use it as a safaty/backup avid MC workstation (just in case my powerbook breaks down on day… you never know…or maybe just to log tapes, or even work on some easy effect-free timelines…)So.. tell me tell me… how did it go?
You were going to play around with some HD clips as well, i take it…greetings from Italy…
Giulio.
