We are contemplating loading Avid MC onto a Mac that currently has FCP 7 with LHi. Obviously, we will not be able to capture from tape into Avid, but thinking perhaps we can capture from tape into FCP, then import the files into Avid. Does anyone this is is a bad, good, or even doable idea? Are there potential problems of this idea I’m not thinking of? Thanks.

Best to have TWO partitions for either system. As the OS and requirements for both can differ. Currently they are the same (well, MC5 requires Snow Leopard while FCP 7 can run on leopard), but they might change in the future.

Issue with the workflow? When you access footage via AMA, like you would if you captured ProRes via the Kona, and work with this footage without transcoding…you cannot output an AAF or OMF for audio. That only works with Avid native media. So if you want to capture with FCP, edit in Avid, then go back to COLOR for grading, you can’t do it…not without converting a couple times. Transcoding ProRes to DNxHD, then back to ProRes.

    Yeah, I tested this a while back…
