    Howdy –
I am re-entering the freelance market after a very long tour of duty on some long format docs, edited on a much older avid ABVB media composer 7.1 running on, believe it or not, a Mac 9500. As 99% of the time on the docs was spent sifting and weaving, this was not a huge liability. But there have been revolutions in the non-linear world in the past few years and consequently, I have not had exposure to any of the newer Avid systems and I need to get myself up to speed.
Does the Avid Express Pro provide a similar / identical interface to the upper tier systems (media composer et all)? I’d rather spend the bucks on a multi-use nle I could own rather than taking some courses… Anyway, I need to come up to speed with the current workflow / tools of many producers in the business.
As an aside, I’ve also been teaching myself final cut pro as a matter of both interest and market practicality.
    THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!
    Rip van winkle…

Avis Express Pro operates virtually the same as an Avid Adreneline system, minus a few keystrokes and minor differences. I’ve edited many 60 minute documentary style shows on Express Pro that were finished in the Adreneline very simply. I vote … go for the Pro.

I don’t think you’ll find much difference initially – most of the improvements over your system are really cool. Color correction, the dissolve tool is a little different, the title tool STILL sucks (although you can soften shadows now)… Marquee is a really neat program, once you get past the manual…

I foresee no problems with your upgrade to a newer Avid. Same interface, cool new toys!

Some may feel differently, but an Avid’s an Avid’s an Avid. I found myself in a very similar situation coming off several years on an older ABVB MC7.1 on a 9600. I don’t think you’ll miss a beat. I also set up a Final Cut room and find myself going back to Avid all over again. It’s still rock solid. If anything, you might find yourself wishing that they would have left well enough alone without some ‘improvements’.

Thanks for all replies. I will feel less nervous in taking jobs without hesitation – which undoubtedly will place me on systems much newer than MC v7.1!
Great forum, hope I can likewise be of help on topics in future.
Oh – peterson and peterallen are same person – I was somehow double registered and Ron L left me with this one.
