I’m thinking of loading Free into a small laptop to take on the road to dump and edit footage (mostly simple cuts and dissolves), but I have a few questions.

First, is this still the same version of Free that was released years ago, or has it been updated to (minimally) mirror the capabilities of the recent versions of the Avid line?

If it has been updated, does it have import options other than DV? I may be using an SD solid-state cam (although that’s not final), and those are usually some mpeg variant, typically mpeg4, I believe. Can Free handle importing this? If the program has been modernized, can it handle a format like HDV?

What are Free’s output options? I know traditionally Avid (Xpress)likes to ignore roughly 90% of codecs on your system (I’ll be a on Windows XP machine), what actual output options do you have? Can you work with stuff like DivX, or does Avid still shaft you on that?

Additionally, can you output image sequence files and separate audio? While we’re at it, can you import these?

Thanks for any info on this.

Can anyone direct me to a copy of Avid Free DV for Mac?

I’m trying to brush up on Avid (I’ve been off it for years using FCP) and can’t afford to buy a copy for practice. I just want to refresh my memory and play around with the interface between jobs. No heavy lifting.

I know there is a free 30 day trial of Media Composer out right now. Unfortunately, my computer does not meet the minimum system requirements–it is not running OS 10.6.3. I do, however, have an older machine, running OS 10.3.9, that could handle Avid Free DV.

Can anyone direct me to an archive of the Avid Free DV software for Mac?

For the record, I have located a copy of Avid Free DV version 1.6.1 for Windows at:

    https://en.kioskea.net/download/download-1992-avid-free-dv

Here is a list of the Avid Free DV system requirements:

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’m under the impression this is no longer available, as you noticed I never got a response to my own question. You might be able to find it somewhere on the web, but I doubt it’s available from Avid themselves.

    Thanks for the note, Phil.

Yes, this is a rather old piece of software. It’s no longer available from Avid, and I cannot find any versions of it for Mac anywhere on the web. I took your advice and tried Versiontracker (now part of CNET)–no dice.

After much searching, I found the Windows version I posted earlier.

If anyone can direct me to the Mac version online, it would be a great help. Thanks!
