Can anyone direct me to a copy of Avid Free DV for Mac?

I’m trying to brush up on Avid (I’ve been off it for years using FCP) and can’t afford to buy a copy for practice. I just want to refresh my memory and play around with the interface between jobs. No heavy lifting.

I know there is a free 30 day trial of Media Composer out right now. Unfortunately, my computer does not meet the minimum system requirements–it is not running OS 10.6.3. I do, however, have an older machine, running OS 10.3.9, that could handle Avid Free DV.

Can anyone direct me to an archive of the Avid Free DV software for Mac?

For the record, I have located a copy of Avid Free DV version 1.6.1 for Windows at:

Here is a list of the Avid Free DV system requirements:

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I posted on my original thread about this, not sure how I wound up here. 🙂 anyway, as I said there, I’m under the impression this is no longer available, as you noticed I never got a response to my own question. You might be able to find it somewhere on the web, but I doubt it’s available from Avid themselves.

Have you tried places like Versiontracker for Mac?

    Thanks for the note, Phil.

Yes, this is a rather old piece of software. It’s no longer available from Avid, and I cannot find any versions of it for Mac anywhere on the web. I took your advice and tried Versiontracker (now part of CNET)–no dice.

After much searching, I found the Windows version I posted earlier.

If anyone can direct me to the Mac version online, it would be a great help. Thanks!

Do you have anything faster/newer that will run MC3.5? In that case, just download a 3.5.x revision from That features a 14-day trial. I think MC4.0 and later features a 30-day trial.

As it has been discontinued since Feb 2007, I doubt you will easily find Free DV.

Thanks for the suggestion, Job. I know my system can handle MC 3.5, but I didn’t know about the 14 day trial period. I appreciate you filling me in.

It’s too bad I’ll have to be selective about when to practice with the application (14 days vs. forever), but beggars can’t be choosers. And I’m sure Media Composer 3.5 is closer to what most suites use than Free DV.

Still, if there is a more long term option, I’m all ears.
