Avid Film Look
Posted by Avideditor on August 17, 2006 at 6:34 pmWondering what plugin I can get to make my footage look like film…I’ve tried Sapphire, but not too impressed, the screen seems to jitter when 3:2 pulldown is applied. And Avid’s 2:3 Cadence filter takes way too long to render.
Any suggestions?

August 17, 2006 at 10:03 pmHi; are you using Sapphire v1 or v2?
In v2, if you have a recent Avid that supports AVX2, you’ll see is a new “Fields” parameter in FilmEffect which you can use to do a simulation of what WOULD happen IF you’d shot on film and then telecine’d it; it will produce the same 3:2 stuttering you’d see with telecine. You should also set the Grain Hold parameter to match your 3:2 stutter so the grain doesn’t change when the frame is held, and vice versa.
Of course if you don’t want that temporal stutter, just keep the Fields param at “As Is.”
If your Avid only supports AVX1, then a plug-in can’t access other fields and frames so it can’t do that kind of stutter effect.

August 19, 2006 at 2:56 amTry Digital Film Tools products. Their 55mm and Digital Film Lab effects suites are pretty cool. There’s also Magic Bullet Editors AVX from Red Giant Software. Boris Continuum Complete has some film-look effects in it too. It’s bundled in with Media Composer Adrenaline 1.5 and later, but you’ll have to buy it otherwise.

August 21, 2006 at 4:56 pmI’ve tried the settings in Sapphire 2, I like the 3:2 pulldown which is the frame rate that I am trying to achieve. The only problem is that the whole image bounces up and down.

August 22, 2006 at 2:38 pmHi Oakmozart; it shouldn’t do that. Please email support@genarts.com with a description of the problem, what system you’re running on, and perhaps a small sample and we’ll look into it.
