    Hi guys,

I made the switch from premiere pro to avid xpress pro a few months back now and have fallen in love with the programme. There is just one problem that keeps reoccuring for me and that is exporting video. When i work on projects that i log/edit i have no problem because i can do everything as reference files ect. however i am now working on a project in which i need to export footage to burn on to disc and send to a college who is useing premiere pro. i am used to being able to go into a folder where all the AVI files have been stored by premiere and then all i have to do is choose the ones i want and burn them to disc. however becuse avid stores video as OMF files i can no longer do this. preferably i would like to export all my footage from avid as AVI files in the same format as they would be if i had logged them on premiere (microsoft DV?) but if not could someone let me know a quicktime, avi or dv format i can export as that i can burn to disc that will be easily compatible with premiere. please be as detailed as possible with descriptions as i have tried a lot of different settings and can’t get it right! thanks in advance, this forum has been a great help to me

The problem you’ll run into using quicktime or non-OMF/AFF exports from Avid is that none of the source information will be preserved – no reference to tape source or TC.

i tried quicktime with animation and then quicktime as DV-PAL, these settings seem fine as far as quality, compatibility and file size are concerned but i keep getting a thin black line at the top of the screen? it’s not there when i export as reference files and i’ve set everything to 4:3 720×576 so i have no idea why it’s there? thanks again for your help.

p.s the files don’t need to include timecodes and tape information because they are only going in a quick edit so it’s not a problem if it’s lost.

If you’re working in Avid and you’re preserving vertical line blanking it might be included when you send it to Premiere. I believe it’s essentially metadata like closed captioning and all–even if you don’t have closed captioning, the space is there.

You say you’re working in DV-PAL. I’m not really familiar with PAL, but here in NTSC land the frame size in an SD Avid project is 720×486. Well, DV is 720×480. When you export out of Avid you do get a thin black line across the top because of the six pixel difference. You can either crop it out when exporting or ignore it–it’s way out of action safe and safe title anyhow. If your final product delivery is for the web, however, you’ll definitely want to crop it. I don’t know if the same thing applies to PAL users, but it’s worth checking.

For the record, when I export a quicktime I typically don’t see the black line either, but when my video is encoded to something like Mpeg2 for DVD or a WMV file the line shows up. Oh the joys of editing. So many little details to look out for. When you export, try setting your video to crop 4 pixels from the top–it should take care of it.

    Michael.
