I am new to Avid DVD. I am making 2 dvds, each with 2, one hour videos. I digitized all 4 videos in with the same settings. And created 4 quicktime reference files, all with the same settings. I then created one dvd with 2 of the videos, and the quality of the videos is great. Then I created a second dvd with the last 2 videos, using the exact same settings, and the quality is poor. Whenever there is any type of movement, whether it be the objects in the shot, or the camera moving, the video quality is obviously bad. I have tried restarting the computer, re-created the quicktime reference files, re-creating the dvd file from scratch, and burning with only one video at a higher bit rate. I am currently burning at a constant bit rate at 5000 kbps. This is the highest I can go to allow the videos to fit on the DVD. These are the exact same settings I used for the first DVD which turned out great. Any advice would be great! Thank you!

I’ve got the same problem and can’t seem to correct it. Are you using Avid Media Composer??

Avid DVD as you may already know is Roxio, Sonic DVDitProHD and has never been a very good application and support for it from Avid or Roxio is horrible Avid should be ashamed to bundled this useless software with MC. I just purchased MC 5 with Avid DVD and have never been able to author a usable DVD. Too buggy, always has been. I use Encore. As much as I hate Adobe Encore is the best thing available for authoring at the present time. Very disappointed in Avid to the point where I am now considering FCP and getting away from PC and Avid crap all together. I don’t think they’ve ever really listened to professional users and are happy with the students and others willing to plunk down hard earned money to be beta-testers. I’ll never understand how Avid has retained the title of “industry Standard” when they bundle MC with consumer software that doesn’t work and the new MC5 doesn’t support AMA for the most popular cameras being used by the masses.

Christie – hopefully you fixed your problem. There are a few things to consider when encoding and authoring to DVD. First, if there is any kind of camera movement, meaning, anything other than a talking head, you need to use VBR, Variable Bit Rate. It varies the bit rate for movement and action. Additionally, it’s best to use 2 Pass. Much better quality encode.

Avid DVD by Sonic is a Sonic product. Sonic has been the workhorse of the DVD industry since the beginning. This product is a simplified version of the powerful stand alone DVD authoring systems that Sonic offers, and as mentioned, is sometimes a buggy solution. I’ve found it can chop off the ends of my videos. Encore, interestingly has a Sonic engine, and the capacity to do some really nice things.

You’re smart to purchase Avid. It’s the grandfather of non-linear editing, the work-horse and standard in the industry. The best editors in the world who have worked on different non-linear systems will tell you that hands down Avid is there choice of software. Good Luck!!
