    Hi there,

I have a load of dvc pro tapes that have already been captured in Avid so they exist digitally in Avid DV codec. What I want to know is what is the difference between the avid dv codec and the apple dv codec used by fcp?

If I want to edit in fcp would it be best to recapture directly from the tapes so I have them in apple dv codec – or is there a lossless way of converting from avid dv to apple dv? Or are they just the same anyway?

    Many thanks!

    Sam.

    Hi Sam,
When you capture to Apple Dv or Avid DV, you are just writing in your HD the information already stored as DV in tape. The only difference is that the Avid codec use some Chroma Filtering when playing.
This make the picture looks better when played, but the information is pixel by pixel the same.
    Just don’t worry about.

    Hi Sam,

If the files are mxf then you could give this plugin for FCP a try. Just downloaded it but have not used yet. It allows .mxf import into FCP 6.0 and above. Its designed for p2 mxf but maybe it will save you the time of recapturing. Good Luck.
