I’m working on a client’s rig, running Avid Express Pro HD 5.2.4 on Windows XP Professional 5.1 on a Xeon 3 gh with 3gb of ram. Seems like a good rig, but:

I can’t make any edits using Splice-in or Ovewrite – I get a prompt that says insufficient video even though I have plenty of source video. I can drag and drop the clip into the timeline, but this is very clunky. I’m finding this happens no matter which user settings I use.

Also, there seem to be NO effects available. Does Avid ship products without any effects whatsoever?

Have mercy on me. I’m a media composer kind of guy, and I’ve been away.

As far as insufficient source, the play head isn’t parked on the last frame of the source is it?

If you click on the effect tab in the project, there are no effects? If that’s the case, you may need to reinstall the software. All systems have at least basic effects.

    Hey James

It didn’t matter where the playhead was parked or how I marked the clip.

If it’s possible to load the Avid without effects, that must be what the client did. Wacky clients!

I don’t think it’s possible to do an install without any effects.

Found the effects, still having issues with Splice and Overwrite. Also, weird sounding error messages from Windows like “Delayed Write Error-All Information Will Be Lost”

“Delayed write failure” might indicate that one of the drives is failing. Do they have external attached storage like USB or firewire drives? Often delayed write failures happen when USB or Firewire drives are improperly removed. Might be that a drive is spinning down unexpectantly due to failure.
Might want to do a little listen to see if you can hear any clicking or wind up/down noises from any of the drives.
You might really advise this client to back up anything important on this system, then run XP’s error checking or some other diagnostic utility on the drives.
