Avid DS; user feedback request
I just posted the following in the FCP X forum, to get some feedback on the state of DS. I’m posting here too since this is where I’d likely find some DS users who can offer their input. FYI, I’ve been primarily working in FCP, AE, and Shake the past few years, but I did cut on an AVID for a couple of years when I was cutting music videos:
“I placed in one of the qualifying scores in an international contest held by Softimage back in the Softimage 3D days. The reward was a week of training, and being part of the first class to be certified in the highest level of SI 3D. One of the other bonuses, was that I got to play with Softimage XSI and Softimage DS before they were shown to the public. I thought DS was very cool, but I was primarily working in 3D at the time. I know that there’s some people out there who have been using DS (now Avid DS) for many years, and love it, but it never really caught on with a large user base. I was just looking at it again, and I see that it has direct import capability of Avid MC projects.
Is there anyone in here who has been using the more recent versions of DS who would like to share their opinion on the capabilities, workflow (both within DS and alongside MC), and support for DS?”

It has some neato things to it but if you weigh it against other NLEs doller vs capabilities, man it’s easy to see why there are so many $1k NLEs out there complimented with After Effects. As an editor, I have no beefs with it at all. As a check-writer, it’s simply never been in the running here.

One of the strengths of DS is speed.
Everyone’s situation is different. In our situation, the money we could have saved with an AfterFX/NLE option, would have cost us big time down the line. We need to be able to deliver under tight deadlines, in an environment where last minute changes can often happen. Our clients know this and return having full confidence in our ability to do this (amongst many other things).
But it all depends on your own specific needs specific.
Those are good links Marianna posted, especialy the google list. Yes, we’re vocal about DS. Someone has to be 😉
