  • Avid doubling some frames on imported video (23.976 / DNxHD). What’s going on?

Hi. So, I’m working in a 23.976 timeline, 1080p DNxHD. I’m exporting to lossless (Animation) Quicktime movie files that are, indeed, 23.976. I’m compositing in After Effects, 23.976, and exporting to lossless AVI 23.976. Then I import to Avid and…. the video is out of sync. When I compare the Avid import to the exported After Effects file, yes, Avid has doubled some frames here and there, making the video run longer. What’s going on? My project is 23.976, the After Effects export is 23.976 (with no doubled frames), and I see no Avid settings for import that would/could change the timebase. I’m thoroughly confused.

There could be an issue with the import. Is there audio with the AVI or just picture. Try sequential TIFF files and see if there is an frame doubling issue there.

This is an amazing coincidence… I just posted this exact same problem/question to the Avid message board just last night. The only difference is that I am using DV footage instead of HD. The exact same problem happens when I export quicktime-animation codec from AE and import in Avid.

Indeed, even the 2 files (original and AE-modified), as viewed in the AE timeline, are perfectly matched up… so this leads me to believe it is directly related to something in the Avid import process doubling frames.

The following is a link to my post in the Avid forums

    https://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/30345/ShowPost.aspx

I have found that if I use the dvcpro codec (not the AvidDV codec) it seems to work although Avid warns that I am using a different resolution than my project. I would like to output a higher resolution file from AE though, such as Animation or None.

Yes indeedy, it is in the Avid import. I simply opened the AE exported file in Quicktime and looked for the double frames. Nope, they aren’t there. Avid added those frames on import. Quite a number of times, knocking the picture out of sync after only a few seconds. Indeed, as per Michael’s suggestion, I tried an image sequence, and that does not have the double frames. So that’s a workaround.

I see you’re using 5.2.1 too. I think the 5.21 update does not fix the memory allocation error it was intended to fix, and to boot introduces this new bug that you and I are reporting. Seems to have to do with 23.976 projects.

    Here’s some random factoids.

    – Image sequence imported with correct duration, 22:07.

    – Lossless .AVI imported too long, 22:12.

    – This difference between the above two is broader than the pullup/pulldown ratio. So, beats me what it corresponds to.

    – In After Effects I tried a 24p export instead of 23.976, and the Avid import was same length, 22:12, five frames too long.

    – Imported the original file again, but this time I turned off options for converting audio sample rate and bit depth. (Important note — the file I’m importing has *no* audio track), and this time…. the import was *even longer*! at 22:15.

So there ya go. Go figure. Have nice day.

Found the fix.. Open up avid Console. “⌘6”
    Type: ingoreqtrate true

Now when you import avid will no longer drop any frames or create double frames..

I think your avid will stay in this mode even after restart.

    To change back: ignoreqtrate false

    now wasn’t that easy. 😉
