    I have Davinci Lite 8.1.1 and am trying to work out the Avid roundtrip. I’m using MC5.5.3. I can get the AAF file from Avid into Resolve, grade it, render and export an AAF. I just can’t get it back into Avid with the rendered files linked. CAn anyone explain the best workflow?

    Are you putting the rendered MXF files in a numbered folder under the Avid MediaFiles/MXF tree on the root directory of one of your drives? Are you exporting a new AAF from Resolve and using that for the round tripped version?

    Hi MM,
    I just posted a thread regarding my first Avid job with offline dnxhd and conforming back to r3d for grading but have yet to get any responses.

    MM i am curious if you can point me towards something in the manual or a source online for exact directions on Avid round-tripping and more importantly with RED material edited offline with avid dnx transcodes etc.

    any help would be great as I need to properly advise the avid editor on how to prep everything for me to receive and work with on my full version of Resolve.

    Hi Mike
    Thanks exactly what I’ve done. It’s when I get back to AVID I’m not sure what to do. I import the AAF and it doesn’t seem to be linking to my graded files. It links to the original ones. Also there is no Audio tracks. Obviously I must have some settings wrong somewhere.

    You can force it to ignore the original files by moving the originals out of the Avid MediaFiles tree. That will take them offline. The next time you relink it should only see the new files.

    Really? Is that the way every roundtrip for AVID has to be done? When roundtripping FCP and COLOR, it would automatically link the rendered files.

    So you’re rendering out, then exporting a new AAF from Resolve right? Move the rendered MXF files into the proper Avid media directory, then import that new AAF. I think it should be good.

    Another thing you can do is to export an ALE from Conform (right click on the timeline.) Then import that ALE into bin and it should relink to the rendered MXFs. You can then relink your cut sequence to these rendered clips by doing a relink to selected media.

    There’s really no need for an ALE. If you place the rendered MXF files in a numbered folder under the Avid MediaFiles/MXF tree, then bring up Media Composer, you should see a file ending in .mdb that has been added to the folder. Drag that file into a bin and it will populate the bin with all the master clips for the files you created. You can then highlight all of them and do the link to selected as suggested. Of course, assuming your new clips are less compressed than the originals, relinking using Least Compressed should also work even if the old clips are still on line.

    While it may seem simpler to use file names, as Final Cut does, the advantages of Avid’s database approach become obvious when you want to switch between resolutions, or between ungraded and graded media. since the tape names and time codes are the same, you can go between them based on compression, specific location, or file type. You can even relink to completely different media brought in via AMA, such as ProRes or AVCIntra files. Final Cut is far less flexible in file relinking because it relies solely on file names.

    It’s definately a better way to handle media. Loving it over FCP.

    Actually the idea of the ALE is to bring the tape name metadata with the new graded media. I haven’t been able to relink the sequence without it in my quick/dirty tests. But I could be doing something wrong?

    In my experience, you have to render out the MXF files from Resolve with the advanced export option set to None, as opposed to Avid AAF round trip. Files rendered out this way relinked for me, whereas with Avid AAF Round trip selected, they did not.
