  • Avid crashes at startup while scanning media files.

System: Avid Xpress Pro 4.8.4 on Mac OSX 10.4

Initial Problem: At start up, Avid scans a drive in an RAID Array called “Ext RAID 3”. It then goes into a process called “Indexing of Ext RAID 3” during which the application freezes and must be force quit. So the questions are: Why is Avid scanning this drive when no new media has been added and why is it crashing? Our first thought was that Avid was crashing at startup due to a corrupt file on the drive “Ext RAID 3”.

Attempted Solution: Media files were removed in batches from the OMFI Media Files folder in increments of half of the remaining amount in an attempt to isolate the corrupt file. From the initial amount of 16,000 files, 8,000 files were removed. Avid startup froze again, so 4,000 files were removed from the remaining 8,000 files. Avid froze again, so 2,000 files were removed from those 4,000 files and so on. The crashing continued until I got down to 400 files remaining and then removed 200 files, again cutting the amount of media files in half. This time, the application quickly scanned through the “Ext RAID 3” drive and started up successfully. This suggested that the corrupt file was somewhere in the batch that was just removed. So from that batch I added small amounts of media files back into the OMFI Media Files folder, hoping to discover the point that the Avid would crash again, and thus isolating the corrupt file. Oddly enough, all of the files from the suspect batch made it back into the OMFI Media Files folder without the application crashing at startup. So, one at a time, I returned all the batches back into their original home. The Avid successfully started each time I did this until I got to the final batch. After hours of moving files, I am back to square one. Any suggestions?

    Create a new OMFI folder.
    Move the media into it.
do not include the media database files. let avid rebuild them.

If this doesnt help, you may have problem with the RAID.

I’ve deleted the database files and let Avid rebuild them a few times already. Is this not the same thing as creating a new OMFI Media Files Folder?

    thanks

No. I have seen a new folder make a difference. It cant hurt. Give it a try.

I tried a new folder and moved the media files, but not the database files and it didn’t work. It must be a drive problem? Thanks for your responses, John.

Was this drive moved from another system? If it was a PC system, you may have an OS permission issue.
Take ownership of the OMFI media folder and add ‘everyone’ with full control in the security panel.

I had the same problem on my avid. What worked for me was to do the same process as you described. But I was told that avid can only keep up with about 8000 files in a single Database.
Try throwing away old Precompute files and stuff you dont need. Even after this it took avid a couple tries to get straight. After that i have kept my files down to a minimum and have had no trouble since, well with that at least, its still an AVID. hope this helps.

Had the same problem with our PC Adrenaline (2.6.1) system and spent hours on the phone with Avid support. First, check drive permissions because that can really screw things up.
Then download MDV which is a tool similar to Media Mover https://fiool.nm.ru/progz/ and have it move all the media out of the OMFI folder. Delete any databases in the OMFI folder. Then move media back to the OMFI folder on a project by project basis.
Start the Avid program and it will rebuild it’s database.
When you move a project to OMFI and Avid fails to re-build, you know at least what project the file resides in and go from there.
    Good luck hunting!
