Avid Crash often
Posted by Steven Carter on April 8, 2008 at 8:09 pmMy avid express pro has been crashing 4-10 times a day. I’m not sure why. I have never tried reloading avid software and was wondering If that might be my first course of action. Would it keep all of my projects, etc. intact.

April 8, 2008 at 8:58 pmWhat version of Xpress are you running, What system are you running it on (PC or Mac), what OS, what version of the OS (XP Pro, Home, Tiger, Leopard, Service Pack 1, 2, etc…), what graphics card, what version of Quicktime, and all other system specs please!
Also, when did this start happening? What changed on your system recently. What have you installed/uninstalled recently, and what does the crash happen? What specifically are you doing when it crashes, and do you get an error message?
We’ll need a lot more information before we can start to figure out what’s wrong.

April 8, 2008 at 9:17 pmExpress Pro version 5.2.1 on pc running xp,quicktime 7.1.6,
NVIDIA Quadro Fx 540 card. It crashes alot coming out of the digitize tool back to editing mode, and sometimes when I park my position bar on the timeline it crashes.I just recently started managing my media with mediasift. I only keep projects that I am working on for that day in the OMFI folder, seems to work great, but the crashing started before that I started using that method. -

April 10, 2008 at 2:15 pmI am having a similar problem…but I’m using Media Composer with the same NVIDIA card. I wonder if it has something to do with the NVIDIA driver? Ever since I upgraded mine, my system freezes up. It doesn’t really “crash” (ie. I don’t get the blue screen of death or any error messages) – it just totally freezes up and even the mouse won’t work so the only option is a hard system shut down / unplug. But it seems to happen mostly when I come out of the digitize tool as well. I’ve also noticed that the video (of the tape being digitized)in my record monitor pauses and studders while I’m digitizing…like it can’t keep up. What driver do you have installed for the NVIDIA card?

April 10, 2008 at 3:12 pmnot sure which driver I am using but my system freezes just like yours several times a day. I had to set my autosave to every minute cause I am having to redo or redigitize over and over if the bin has not been saved. Have you ever reinstalled your software before? I have not and was wondering if it might help but fearful of losing projects and certain things.

April 10, 2008 at 5:53 pmI’ve been thinking the same thing! I have never re-installed and I’m really reluctant to do it…I’m afraid it will be a lot of work (backing up project files & such) for nothing. I was kinda hoping someone on the forum could help.
I might just have to do it though – I’m also having problems with the waveform/vectorscope in colour correction (it just doesn’t work at all).
If I do – I’ll let you know how it goes. 🙂

April 10, 2008 at 7:03 pmAre your systems connected to the internet? Have any automatic updates run recently? Has anything at all on your system changed recently that could be attributed to the crashes?
Otherwise, try making new user settings first. See if that fixes things. If not, check the drivers for your graphics card and let us know what you’re running. If you decide to reinstall, it will only take about 10 minutes.
First, go to your Avid folder and back up the Avid Users, the Avid Projects, and the Avid Attic. Just copy them to your desktop. Uninstall Avid, pop in your disk or download the installer again, and reinstall. Restart the computer, and you’re done. It should keep your user settings and your projects, but back them up in case. Takes a few minutes–15 at most.
Good luck, and let us know what graphics card drivers you’re running and whether anything was installed/reinstalled/updated recently on your systems.
Michael.
