  • AVID Artist Color (Euphonix) or Tangent Waves Panel?

Posted by Julian Gil on July 6, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Looking to get a panel for my future Resolve 8 purchase. What panel would be better in terms of functionality and speed? If anyone has any insight that would really be appreciated.

    Thanks.

The best panels are the ones that are specifically built for DaVinci Resolve.

Otherwise, your choose one of the third-party builds might depend on what you might have used in the past, or whether you would like to perhaps use this panel with other applications. You should be able to search out the devices and check the specs. Afrer that it will be down to your personal feel.

    Thanks Joseph.

While I’d love to get a Resolve dedicated panel, that’s just not going to happen right now. So, since I’m moving from Color to Resolve, I’m really just wondering what would allow me better access to Resolve? I’m leaning toward the Artist Color panel, with it’s smaller footprint, but if I can do more with Tangent Waves in Resolve then I’ll gladly sacrifice form for function.

I’m somewhat familiar with other programs that support the panels, but I’m mainly concerned with Resolve.

I looked at this question for quite some time. The build quality is better with the Euphonix, but it’s smaller size is both it’s strength and weakness. The point of a control is to have everything at your fingertips. With apple Color I found that the Wave allowed me to do less digging for the tools I needed. It also function simply by plugging in a USB cable. The Euphonix is ethernet based, sometimes a pain. So I chose a Wave panel and I love it.

This said I do not really know how both of these are mapped for Resolve, so the real question is how easy both are for this app.

    Anyone else care to elaborate?

Thanks for the reply, some good insight. I keep going back and forth between both. I’m looking at the literature from Black Magic for both panels and how the buttons are mapped and it looks like the Wave panel has more options available without having to flip pages as deep as the Artist panel. I’m wondering if there is anyone who has used both for Resolve and if they prefer on over the other and why?

I chose the wave panel and I am happy…did not like the ethernet aspect of the Euphonix and also like in Color you have to dig around!

Wave while a little bigger is actually not that big – real-estate-wsie its still pretty small next to my wacom & keyboard.

Get the MC Color if you will ever be using Smoke on OS X.

I think you can customize the Euphonix panel for Resolve 8 so digging through menus isn’t much of an issue anymore. I’ve used the Wave and Euphonix extensively and the Euphonix definitely wins in build quality(the rings are like butter) but the fact that you need ethernet and an extra power supply is lame. If you ever want to migrate to other software, the Wave is your best bet because more apps support it.

As far as layout goes, I like the Wave’s track wheel and ball setup because it feels closer to the older da Vinci panels.

It amazes me how much FUD people are willing to spread for no reason whatsoever.
Just because Euphonix is Ethernet based, it doesn’t mean, that it’s any more difficult to install, than the Wave. As a matter of fact it’s exactly the same. Install software, connect, choose DHCP and you’re done. How’s that more difficult, than USB? In fact, ethernet is more robust, works at long distances, just like any ethernet devices (try to use USB panel on anything, more than 20 ft) and Eupohonix is network-able. You can connect Euphonix to the router and use it with any computer on the network. And I’m not even talking about the ergonomics, with Wave being total abomination. But the bottom line for me is, I’m using it with Smoke and Resolve. With Wave it’s a no go…

If you read my post I said “but the fact that you need ethernet and an extra power supply is lame.”

My main point was that you need an extra power supply because it’s not USB powered. I think that’s a hassle when I’m working on set, but that’s just my opinion.

Your point would have been valid, if Euphonix was the only device needing the power…
