  • Avid and the Sony M35U, Help!!!

    Hi there,

I’ve been using the Sony M35U for HDV firewire digitizing the last several months with MC 2.2.7. Hasn’t been great as it doen’t cue very well when batch digitzing but worked well enough to do large doses of full tape digitizing. However, just recently I have been trying to digitize firewire the deck and audio does not come into the Avid, yet video does fine. Settings have never been altered on the deck and have tried different tricks including: switching user settings, switching firewire cables, and even running on new 3.1.1 systems. The batch problem was bad enough but I learned to deal with that, but this is just ludicrous now. I have called Sony to explain the problem, but they refuse to help, claiming because the stream can take video and firewire doesn’t separate audio out, they think it’s something on my side. I am at my wits end with this machine. I am forced to crash digitize now in hopes that the tape TC does not change throughout. Is there anything I can do???? I strongly advise all parties using Avid software to stay away from this deck at all costs.

    Thanks,

    Nick

Unfortunately, this is the ONLY deck that supports Sony’s new cameras with 24P HDV. The higher end 1500A does not!

    Thanks Sony!!!!!

Nicholas, what Sony told you holds water… there’s no way firewire can separate audio bits from video bits in the data stream. There’s gotta be something on your end. Something as simple as not having audio active when in the record tool? System specs? It could be anything. I also know a few that have the same deck and they don’t have these issues.

Terence, the deck that replaced the M15U, the M15AU has 24p support also, as well as being able to playback Canon’s 24F modes (or so I’m told)

Well, that still doesn’t give us a Pro deck to work with. This puts us back in the early days of HDV.

Just a quick thought, did the cameraman happen to shoot 24P as opposed to 24P in 60i?
