I’m trying to get a new Avid up and running, and am hitting a major snag when I go to capture. I am capturing from a Sony HDV camera, and am downconverting out of the camera, so running a DV signal via firewire into the Adrenaline.

The system sees the camera, recognizes the timecode, gives me a preview window with the video from the camera, and gives me deck control.

When I go to capture video, I am consistently getting a message that says “Exception: A drop frame tapes was inserted. A non-drop frame tape was expected. Please insert the correct non-drop frame tape.”

I’m sure there must be a setting that I’m not aware of. Possibly a project setting? Ive tried playing with the deck settings, and have tried both drop frame and non-drop frame, but to no avail.I’m primarily a FCP editor, and am getting back into Avid for the first time in 5 years. Have things changes alot?

    Thanks for your help!

try renaming your tape to make the software think you’ve inserted a dofferent one.

I had the same problem and called Avid tech support. The tech support person said that the Z1U was not a certified deck. The message you got means that it will not recognize the deck/camcorder’s timecode because it is not really SMPTE timecode. You have to disable the machine control by x’ing out the vtr icon and rolling the deck yourself in the capture tool, then you get time of day timecode associated with you downconverted footage. I think by October 15th, if you have an Avid support package, the next version should support HDV and take care of your problem. We also have Xpress Pro HD and it now supports the Z1U with machine control and timecode support.

Play the tape before entering the reel number and Avid should store the correct frame code mode with the reel number.
