i have an avi explosion on a black background which also came with the same explosion, but just the alpha channel, so the explosion is all white, and then there is the solid black background. try as i might, and having searched the forums a bit about this, i can’t seem to get a perfectly clean key with these two clips. i found one thread that mentioned that the problem might be inherent in avi’s in general in FCP, so maybe that is the final answer. i’ve also just tried applying the luma key effect to the color clip and it keys out okay, but not as well as it seems like it should…

Combining the two clips is not a keying function. A keyer will not see the alpha. Try looking up Track Matte.

But so much depends on the quality of the AVI and the codec used to create the alpha. IN formation you have not supplied. The source of these files should also be consutled. if they are from a clip house like ArtBeats, the procedures for matting the the two versions is included with their disks.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
