I’ve been using Vegas for a little while and LOVE it, but I’ve been having some issues with rendering good quality clips. I have an Ativa HD cam (pretty much just a knock off mini cam) but it works great and captures good 1920×1080 res. It saves the files as .avi.

Ever since I’ve had it though Vegas has been giving me the “Media Offline” error with them. I’ve had to compress the files into mp4s before editing and then render them again as mp4’s. The quality just comes out horrible. I used GSpot and it said that the avi’s are saved as H264/MP4 codecs and that they ARE installed.

I can play the clips just fine in VLC and I can drag the clips into my media bin in Vegas, but it wont let me drag/drop it into the trimmer or actual media bar.

Any ideas? I’m installing a Premier demo now to see if that works… but I don’t want to switch! Vegas has been so pleasant up til now!

Rendering mp4 in an AVI container to an MP4? That’s gotta be terrible.
MP4 doesn’t mean it’s standardized. Any number of decoders may or may not work. VLC will open about anything.
The easy answer is to say your camera is not supported, and quite possibly not supported by Premiere, either.

There may be a third party conversion tool. There are “flavors” of MP4 that aren’t supported by all the NLE’s out there.
