Avi FILES Sony Vegas Platinum 11.0
Hi,
I’ve just recently started using the new Sony vegas 11.0 after switching to Windows 7 64-bit. The problem is, when I try to import avi files and some mp4 files(some work and some do not), it says ” none of the files dropped could be opened”.However, before, on my sony vegas 10 pro(while I was still in windows xp), I was able to view these same files just fine.
I’ve done research throughout the internet about downloading codecs, and I did just so, but I kept reading and I heard that codecs could be dangerous. Luckily, I had system restore, so i restored it back to before I downloaded the codec.
Now, even doing further research, people are saying I need to download a specific codec using GSpot, but Gspot tells me I already have that codec. Still, Sony vegas wont import my files -_- and I ran out of things to do besides wait for tech support to respond, but they haven’t answered yet.
Sorry, if it’s too long. Long story short, my files aren’t getting imported on sony vegas and I already used Gspot and it said I already have the codec installed.

Not all AVI and MP4 files are created alike. How were these files created? Were they sourced from a camera or converted from some other source? Not all manufacturers follow the Microsoft AVI container spec.

The fact that you said you had no issues using them in Vegas 10,
proves that the files are ok…..The big question is why your
Vegas 11 is having problems with them on your 64bit system?
Its probably not a codec issue.
Do these files play in media player etc. perfectly on your system?Steve Rhoden

Steve – he went from Pro 10 to Platinum 11 (a downgrade in my opinion), so there is likely fewer codecs installed.
OP – use Mediainfo to determine what codec created he file.

Thanks for all of the quick response guys! Oops, I guess I didn’t realize that my Platinum 11 was worse. My friend recommended it and I wanted to try it. I guess I might just switch back to Pro 10. It still bothers me though (shouldn’t a 11.0 version, which is later version, be better than 10.0?).
Anyways, the avi files I have were downloaded online so I’m not sure about how they were created. Some of my mp4 files were converted using youtube converter. It may be a problem with the files, but they do play perfectly in media player.
Also, I tried the mediainfo program. It said Xvid, so I downloaded the codec, turned on sony vegas and the file could still not be imported.

I don’t recall who posted this, but:
“Xvid and DivX are not supported by Vegas. If you are using a 64-bit version of Vegas you would need a 64-bit Xvid codec.
Anyway the solution is to not use Xvid or DivX so just convert the files with something like AviDemux to a format like Motion-JPEG video with PCM audio and the files should edit fine.”

Julie, the Youtube converter does not strictly adhere to the AVI specification. Vegas Platinum 11 is a improvement of Vegas Platinum 10, not Vegas Pro. The two products are aimed at completely different target markets. Platinum is priced and featured for consumers, whilst Vegas Pro is for professional editors. As Stephen suggested, if offers better codec support.
Is Platinum 11 installed on the same PC as Vegas 10? It sounds as though you upgraded your PC to be able to use Windows 7 x64. If that is the case, you may have installed a codec pack such as codec lite on the old PC. It is recommended you DO NOT install codec packs as they can really screw up Vegas Pro. Resist the temptation!

Use gspot to identify your codec. It may already be installed, but the file used to create the AVI file may not have followed those specifications closely. I would seriously avoid installing any Codecs other than the one’s Vegas ships with. It is not working for a reason.
