I need to export an AVI file of my FCP project so that it will fit onto one DVD-ROM. When I export this file now, the size is 4.8GB- slighly too large to fit onto one disc. Obviously, I need to figure out a way to make this AVI file smaller, but I only need to loose .5 to .6 GB in doing so in that the purpose of all of this is to provide another party with an uncompressed raw file from which he can burn a DVD at maximum quality. Unfortunately, AVI on a DVD-ROM is the only method by which they’ll accept the file. Any help would be most appreciated as I am on a deadline.

Is it possible to burn the files to a Dual Layer disc?

you could also try a program called Split and Concat https://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/

this program, which is donorware, breaks down files into smaller chunks and will then rebuild them back into one file.

Are you saying there is also a maximum time limit for your project?

You cannot send them uncompressed video in AVI format because it would need to be compressed to become smaller. You can only make your program shorter.

However, the terms uncompressed, AVI and FCP don’t necessarily all go together in one sentence correctly.
If your production format was DV, you’re already super-compressed.
Transcoding to AVI, even QT AVI, implies compression.

Your best alternative might be to buy a small hard drive and ship that to them.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I should have said minimally compressed, not uncompressed, and neither a small hard drive nor a dual layer DVD-R are options. Nevertheless, I think I have figured out the problem, and I appreciate your help. I don’t take the comment about reading the manual personally, but I do find it interesting how often that statement is made on this forum. It was my understanding that said forum is here for those of us who have either failed to find certain information in the manual or simply seek a different wording(s) for optimum comprehension.

    Hi,

I had this problem once and I just split the file into 2 avi’s and sent them on 2 dvd’s. then, when they made it to the client, I got them to use them separately or stitch them together.

I made the cut during a cut scene of black (a fade transition) so you could never see where it was split.

have you tried zipping the avi ? does that make it small enough ?

    Hope you find a solution

    James
