.avi compatibility.
Posted by Alexander Gao on January 19, 2006 at 10:35 pmDoes anyone know of a free program that will convert .avi into .mov? Quality is not the major concern, i just need that conversion so i can downscale the footage in AE.

January 19, 2006 at 10:37 pmI assume you are on a Mac.
You can import .avi into After Effects, by telling AE it is a Quicktime movie. When you go to “import”, select “show all files” or whatever it is at the top of the finder window. This will allow you to select the avi. Then down the bottom, where you have to specify the file type, choose “Quicktime”. Annoying, but works perfectly.

January 19, 2006 at 11:08 pmYes, I probably should have explained that’s what I meant.
On a Mac, you cannot import an AVI directly- the file selecter does not let you pick avis. I assumed that Alexander wanted to get an AVI into After Effects (because this is the AE forum) but because you can’t do it directly on a Mac, was asking for a way to convert it to a mov.
Perhaps I assumed too much, but I thought that by explaining how you can import an AVI into AE running on a Mac, you don’t need to convert it first- and then, as you suggest, you can just use AE to render it out as a mov 🙂

January 19, 2006 at 11:10 pmfor some reason the video doesn’t show up in AE when I simply import it, so that’s an answer to Arahon: If i rendered it, it’d just be kinda blank. By the way, Arahon, I love your podcasts. They’re great and interesting.

January 19, 2006 at 11:13 pmThanks. I appreciate your listening 😉
So as I understand it when you try an import AVI’s into After Effects, they don’t import. Nothing happens, right? Or is it that it’s imported, but you can’t see anything?

January 19, 2006 at 11:45 pmOh. The only thing I can think of is that although the file is an avi, it’s a non-standard codec such as a DivX variant or similar. In that case I can’t offer any suggestions.
I have experienced exactly what you describe when trying to use DivX footage, although exactly what codec it was I don’t know. DivX seems to cover a wide range of things….

January 20, 2006 at 12:26 amthat would be my call. Some kind of non-standard codec that AE doesn;t understand.
Can you render you’re AVI’s uncompressed?

January 20, 2006 at 1:52 amSometimes you just need access to a Windows box to do conversions. This may be one of those times.

January 20, 2006 at 4:57 amfortunately i do have 3 windows machines, but after effects still can’t handle .avi files on these machines. What’s the deal? Do I need to download some codec or something?
