  • AVI codec detection – AVI plays, won’t load into AE

Posted by Eric Chard on July 4, 2007 at 12:16 am

I’ve got an AVI file that plays fine in WMP, RealPlayer, and QTPlayer. However, it does NOT load into AE or Premiere.

Both give the error: “No such AVI compressor”

(Hey Adobe, could you maybe supply more HELPFUL error messages?? Like maybe the NAME of the missing compressor? Geeze, it IS 2007 y’know.)

Using GSpot (nice utility) it tells me the AVI file uses the Motion JPEG compressor, and that the codec IS installed, which makes sense because the file plays in all those players listed above.

So, what gives? It plays, so obviously the codec IS on my machine. Why won’t AE recognize it?

    Tnx.

Where did you get the AVI?

I have less experience with AVI than MOV, but if it’s anything like the WAV and AIFF relationship you could try changing the extension of the file to .mov and see if that works for you.

    I had the same problem

I used the free program ‘virtual dub’
which can load my file ( in my case
a .avi file ) and export it into an
.avi file Adobe can read. I loaded
    it into After Effects CS4

    seems to be working fine

    good luck
