.avi background image bugger
Posted by Zowie Repoza on February 20, 2008 at 10:18 pmThis has been a major bugger from day one:
when I load an .avi animation created elsewhere into PI, it doesn’t show up.
Imported video footage from a camera works fine–but I do a lot of animation work with .avi’s created in everything from flash to lightwave.
Thinking it might be an unrecognized codec prob, I’ve tried loading my .avi’s into other compilers like vDub or TmpgeNC and saving them out again as .avi’s, but nothing seems to work.
Any clues o ye mighty ones as to why these imported .avi’s aren’t showing up in the background? (Version 2.05).
Talk about disrupting the work flow…
Thanx y’all for your attention,

February 20, 2008 at 10:23 pmAre they saved as uncompressed AVIs? pIllusion has always had issues with uncompressed on some machines.
(You really should upgrade to the latest version if you really are using 2.x still)
Alan.

February 21, 2008 at 3:59 amAlways work uncompressed ‘less the customer needs it small or it’s going out on the web–but hey that makes sense. Loaded my original into Prem and saved it out (I thought) uncompressed but it then loaded fine into PI.
And yes, that’s prob’ly valid advice, to upgrade. It’s just that I’ve always had a smidge of resentment here, after having spent three hundred dollars for my version and had this as a response to every single problem I’ve ever had with it: upgrade.
(Guess I didn’t realize I was paying to beta test this software).
Thanx Alan, for your helpful advice,

February 21, 2008 at 6:32 amIf you purchased the program, you did so accepting the software in the form it came in. Although the software should work as advertised (and it’s great when a program has fixes released that make it work as it was designed to), it really is on your head if you didn’t download the trial and test it properly on your hardware. No one should pay for software hoping a patch will arrive to fix any issues that might arise.
So, at the end of the day you haven’t payed for beta quality software unless you chose to.

February 21, 2008 at 9:11 amLaw isn’t my thing, but I don’t believe this is a case of caveat emptor. I’m assuming the Eula for PI2 is similar to the one for version 3, and if so, please see the points under Warranties and Disclaimer.
No one tried to swindle you- you agreed to the conditions as they were set out (which are common to similar software products, and quite reasonable).

February 21, 2008 at 1:14 pmI only suggested upgrading (the upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 is only $75) because there are tons of features that 3.0 has that 2.0 doesn’t that will let you do much more, and let you do them faster. People on 3.0 have had the exact same issue with uncompressed that you do (don’t know about the 3.0.2+ versions though — we updated the movie system and uncompressed may work fine for people now).
As far as using uncompressed, why would you want to? There are free completely lossless codecs such as Huffy UV and Lagarith that will give you pixel-for-pixel identical results to uncompressed at much smaller file sizes (sometimes dramatically smaller depending on your footage). You should give them a try.
Alan.

February 22, 2008 at 6:57 pmHey Alan–and Joel,
Been trying to answer y’all’s posts but The Cow wouldn’t cooperate till this morning.
Hey, for all my sniping, I do love my PI. It would be worth that reasonable upgrade price just to get access to all the new emitter libs–say nothing of the enhanced features and speed.
And thanx heaps Alan for those codec tips. Tried Lagarith and I’m astounded. Just assumed compression = loss–but you’ve re-educated me.
Speak of better compression, I’ve just been working with Flash CS3 and its video import quality has improved exponentially. This may not seem pertinent to PI, but check out my new “particle emitter” breakthrough, via Flash:

Again Alan and Joel, thanx for your thoughtful responses to my query.
