June 4, 2011 at 3:49 amI think you meant .ecw, not .ewc. Right?
If so, an .ecw file is an enhanced compression wavelet file for satellite imagery. It requires special players. If you Google it you’ll probably find what’s out there.

Thanks man. You are right, the files were generated by a company that send video reporting to the wires for broadcast purposes.
Do I have to convert the ecw files as well as the avi files?
My understanding is that the avi file is a self contained video file with sound right? If that is the case I just need to convert the avi file into something that FCP reads. Any recommendation on converters? Have tried few with no luck.
Thank you very very much for your help

August 15, 2011 at 4:32 pmHello Hector (and David)
I have been given some .avi and .ewc2 files to use in a FCP project. As David suggests, I googled to find a way to convert the files for FCP. Unfortunately, the only useful link I can find happens to be this thread. 🙂
Did you happen to figure it out Hector? I’ve tried VLC, MPEG Streamclip, Wondershare Video Converter. Perian. Nothing seems to work.

August 15, 2011 at 5:53 pmI have just recently purchased Aunsoft Final Mate for a different job that involved AVCHD footage and the software offered conversion for a large variety of AVI files. Have not tried it for AVIs yet but the conversion from AVCHD into PRORES was perfect.
