    Hi All,

I’ve created a video in FCP 4.5 and delivered the final project on DVD to my client. Now they want an AVI file of the video for their in-house production team to use. I’m working on a mac (but I have access to a pc) and was wondering what the best way is to create an AVI file for my client without breaking the bank.

    any info is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Mike

FCP can export an AVI file… just use file/export/QT Conversion… and set the exported file to be an AVI.

    Thanks Jerry –

I thought that the AVI export was fairly limited from the Quicktime side on a Mac – I’d like to give them a fairly hi-quality avi w/ out using the uncompressed /animation codec, which would create a huge file size…

Click on the Options button once you select AVI… then choose the same format that the source material was in the first place. Changing the codec isn’t going to buy you anything but a larger file. i.e. you can’t improve the video from where it is now don’t think…

    Mike,

Your client is making a mistake. All NLEs on the PC side can import uncompressed QT files such as Animation millions of colors, but not all are actually capable of importing the many flavors of AVI that are created with Compressor. You may get lucky, but there is a big chance that the file will be useless.

You’re absolutely right – thanks for the info – big miscommunication w/ the client – I finally found out he’s using Premiere for the PC so I can give him quicktimes –
