AVCHD to web server
Hello all. I’m usually a FCP editor, but am consulting at a place that only uses Premiere CC.
I have a presentation, filmed AVCHD 1920×1080 29.97, about 50 min long. The company wants me to put these on their Sharepoint site (and avoid Youtube)for streaming. The problem is Sharepoint doesn’t seem to like very large files, and I keep trying different export settings, but none of them seem to be producing a file optimized for streaming.
I’ve changed the resolution to 720×480, taken the bit rate down to 1.8mbps max. I’ve got the audio at 96kbps. I do 2-pass VBR so it’ll look nice. I’ve tried exporting as mp4, .wmv, .mov. It always comes out huge, and buffers endlessly on the server.
Is there some trick I’m missing in these settings? Can I only do 1-pass VBR, and if so is there a way to not have it look like crap? Do I really need to make the resolution even smaller than 720? Should I compress the footage into something else before I even export?
tl;dr: What are the Premiere settings to optimize streaming and produce a workably small file size that still looks decent?

What file sizes are you getting now?

The problem is the length of the file at this point. Having said that, having reduced the size to 720×480 should have reduced this quite a bit from your original. How large is the converted file that you’re ending up with?
Did you specifically try the preset labeled “Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4 and newer – 480p, 29.97 Widescreen”?

For the full 50 min, about 2GB. If I cut it in half, the smallest I’ve gotten is 350 MB.

I tried the h.264 Youtube SD 480p 29.97, but not the Apple settings. I still got a 500MB file with the Youtube setting. I’ll try the Apple one now, and see what happens.

Success! I’ve got the 30 min file down to 198MB, and it looks pretty good. I suspect this is as good as it’s going to get. Thanks!

Some success! Thanks to a suggestion here, I’ve got the file size for the 30min down to 198MB. I used the h.264 Apple Ipad 4 or newer 480 29.97 setting. I suspect this is as good as it is going to get, but if anyone has any other ideas, I’d love to hear them. Thanks!

Glad we could help. I’ve battled this same type of issue for years and I was really surprised when a preset actually worked :).
Now, if I could just get 2.5K down to 1080P 29.97 h.265… (seems that a mad scientist laugh should be heard right about now.)
