AVCHD questions
Does anybody have any insider’s info on whether Sony Vegas Pro 9 will support smart rendering of AVCHD? I just bought a Canon HF100 and it comes with Pixela ImageMixer 3, which is an abomination that doesn’t even let me cut at the GOP boundary, doesn’t even allow precise In and Out points but instead you have to set them by dragging a slider in a tiny window. The only good thing about it is that it actually does smart rendering of AVCHD, while Vegas so far doesn’t. I would love to be able to edit my personal recording in Vegas, but I’m also a sucker for quality and I won’t re-encode all of my footage, not only because for quality but because it would take much longer.
So is anybody here with the same predicament? If so, are you using one of those consumer NLEs such as Ulead or Pinnacle Studio? I would be happy with anything that simply allows me to cut the rough edges, like when you press the stop button and lower the camera too fast and then you have a nasty end of take. I would like to have at least the ability to cut at GOP boundaries, if frame accuracy is not possible. The Panasonic HDWriter software, while far from being an NLE, at least allows to do that, albeit in a screwed up way, but at least you get results. With ImageMixer you don’t get anything.
Sorry for the rant. I’m happy with my new camera but I yearn for the day when Vegas includes AVCHD smart rendering.

Sony never reveals what’s going to be in future versions before it’s time for release. So I don’t think you’ll get any reliable answers on this one.

I have used Ulead and Pinnacle and neither of those does AVCHD smart rendering. The only program that I found that smart renders AVCHD is Nero Vision. You can render an AVCHD project in real time if you don’t use too many cuts and transitions. The only problem is that the editor is very simple and has very few features, but it is a great improvement from the Pixela garbage you get with the camera.
I too am crossing my fingers that the next version of Vegas has smart rendering of AVCHD with a 1920×1080 AVCHD template.

Actually I read that Nero Vision did smart render so I tried it and it didn’t work in my case. I set the options to match my footage and I made sure smart render was selected, but judging by the amount of time it was going to take, I knew it wasn’t going to smart render at all. I didn’t see it as a big improvement over the pixela junk though, it seemed simple and even more annoying in some things.
One thing I discovered playing with the pixela soft that made it not so unbearable for me is that it’s much easier to cut out rough edges in a take by dragging its edges in the timeline rather than in the video window, because the video window wants to redraw dynamically which is why you don’t have any control over it. But if you drag the edges of the take in the timeline view, it might not be totally frame accurate, but at least it’s better, and tolerable for home movies, with the huge advantage that it always smart renders. Of course, if I have to edit something for a customer, I can use Vegas and have all the pro stuff that I need.
