I am having an issue understanding how to import my AVCHD files into Final Cut Pro 6. The SD files are distorted and the HD files are not even seen by my MAC. My $1,000 camera is worthless unless I find the right file converter to solve this issue. It is a digital camera so I do not use tapes of any kind. Also, can someone send a list of files that Final Cut Pro will import? I know that it likes Quicktime files but why can’t I import MP4s? Am I mistaken in thinking that MP4 is a quicktime file?

You must have 6.0.6 or later to ingest AVCHD media. It will not ingest SD material recorded on an AVCHD camera. Should we try to guess what camera this is?

MPEG-4 is not QuickTime. MPEG-4 is not a production format. The FCP tech spec page will list the formats FCP works with, of course the v6 tech specs page is gone, but it’ll get you started. It’s also in your user manual.

    All the best,

I do have version 6.0.6 The camera is a Sony Handycam HDR-SR1 if that is any use to you. I am simply trying to understand the process of getting footage I shoot with this camera into Final Cut Pro. I cannot believe I am the only person to run into this problem but so far nobody seems to be able to help me.

If you have an Intel computer that meets the specs for FCP6.0.6 then you use the log and transfer function to ingest the media as ProRes. Connect the camera using USB open log and transfer and it should load the media.
