AVCHD out of HDMI
We are now shooting on AVCHD units to SDHC cards, and are quite happy that we went this route. Many of you who shoot on HDV can record straight from your HDSDI or HDMI ports to circumvent compression to tape. For those of us going to cards, do the same ideas hold true – will the signal out of the HDMI port be different from signals recorded to HDSC cards. Anyone?

Yes, the signal from the HDMI port is precompression on all cameras (AFAIK). It’s also 10 bit, although the last two bits are set to null (no additional data in those bits). Quality of capture is relevant to the hardware you use.
Bear in mind that the glass on every AVCHD camcorder available today is pretty low grade.Douglas Spotted Eagle
