AVCHD or ProRes media creates ARRI Cinema sequence
Dragging an AVCHD or ProRes file onto the ‘New Sequence’ icon results in an ARRI Cinema sequence.
Well, it’s been 2 years now since this was first mentioned here, and back then it was claimed to be a “known bug” that “Adobe was working on”.
Two years later, and it’s still with us, or at least with me. I realize that if I manually create a new sequence with the AVCHD preset matching my footage, the setting are identical to the corresponding ARRI Cinema sequence, so it seems that the only difference is the name of the preset used. Are there any ramifications to using an incorrect preset for a sequence even though it appears that the actual settings are identical, or are there other ‘behind the scenes’ settings that aren’t correct that could cause problems? It would seem that this isn’t an actual problem if Adobe has been supposedly “working on it” for two years without success.

You are correct that in many cases the only difference in the presets is the name. The presets are put there for people who don’t know, or want to take the time to create a sequence setting based on their footage. They’re designed to be time-savers.
More presets now have preview codecs set up that correspond with the preset name, and many of those presets now match to footage much more accurately when dropping a clip on the ‘new item’ icon to auto-create a sequence.
Clips that don’t have a specific preset are matched to the first sequence preset alphabetically from the list that fits the frame size, rate, and pixel aspect of the footage. (Before ARRI had a preset, AVC-Intra was the typical wild card for 1080p). Since Premiere Pro is basically codec agnostic, it doesn’t matter as the sequence preset name is not a limiter of any kind…
The issue has existed for years. It’s something I file bugs on regularly as I think, particularly with so many FCP switchers now using PPro, it’s quite confusing.
…but it’s not harmful and it won’t create a problem.
