AVCHD native??
Hi all – I am considering buying the Panasonic HMC150 for use in a documentary, but my edit system – Final Cut Pro – doesn’t edit AVCHD files natively. I am told that Avid Media Composer does. Two questions:
1) Is this true? Has anyone edited AVCHD natively on Avid, and does it work seamlessly?
2) If I buy the academic version of Media Composer, which costs one-tenth the price of the regular version, what is it missing? Am I losing essential functionality to get a great deal?

Well, cracking open Avid and connecting my drive with AVCHD footage…I don’t see any way of importing this at all into the Avid. IMPORT only shows XDCAM and P2. Now the P2 can be DVCPRO HD or AVCI…and since they are MXF, Avid edits that natively. But AVCHD is .MTS…not a native Avid codec. So I highly doubt this.
I might have to go to the Avid tutorials to see how to import this into the Avid…I can’t figure it out. FCP converts it to ProRes…which is high quality, but a space hog.

I’m keen to hear an answer here too…
I shot a few hours of footage recently on an HPX-3000 as well as an EX3, all at 1920×1080 50i. I’ve been so swamped with work that I haven’t even had time to try and get it all into AVID. I’m running MC2.8 on mac but awaiting delivery of 3.0.
Any experience shared would be appreciated.

Well, the AVCIntra from the 3000 is supported natively, because it is in the MXF format, which is Avid’s new media format. And there is an XDCAM import option….but I am sure some form of conversion takes place.

That’s what I thought. Once I get clear of this deadline I’ll sit down and do some reading on the subject.
