I have log and transferred my AVCHD footage into a Pro Res timeline sequence, and now I’m hesitating because I’m wondering what would be the best format to export this footage using the (export -quicktime movie option). I want to burn the QT file to a SD DVD for storage and bring back into FCP at a later time.

Should I use DV anamorphic format or Pro Res 422 format? and do I check all frames?

I have already tried the DV anamorphic and I can get about 17 minutes of video onto a DVD, but is there a format that would be better at preserving quality?

DVD-R is not a format for backup up footage, never has been. if this is your only option back up the AVCHD files and then you log and transfer again if you need the footage. To re-compress the footage to say H264 will cause further quality lose and will have to be converted again to use.

So if I have to back up these files on a Data DVD what file format would be the best to preserve the quality?

Better yet what if I had to send these files to another editor on a Data DVD, what would be the recommended file?

I’m recommending that you back up the AVCHD files as they came off the camera not the files in any editing codec. You send these files to an edit and they do a Log and Transfer to what they need. No quality loss, smallest file size.

    Michael,

Sorry but I’m not getting it. Your saying I should copy the BDMV folder off the SDHC card to a Data DVD for another editor and he will be able to transfer these files into his FCP system?
