April 12, 2026 at 2:59 pmFCP has always been finicky with AVCHD formats. Personally I’d just transcode to H.264 and be done with it. I’d not ever expect much love from FCP for AVC formats ever, IMHO.

April 12, 2026 at 4:38 pmIn the ASC FCP forum joema has tested some old interlaced AVCHD files in Shutter Encoder and confirmed that they don’t work in FCP.

April 13, 2026 at 7:24 amHi,
I downloaded and tested, but it does not look good here. Even the original or the rewrapped version played awfully on my machine. I have no idea. It plays well on QuickTime Player and VLC.

April 13, 2026 at 8:03 amI can’t explain why you are having problems with the original file.
Joema in the link I provided has found the same results as me . . . normal AVCHD files play perfectly in FCP but those rewrapped in Shutter Encoder don’t.

April 13, 2026 at 8:12 amIgnore my earlier reply.
I have just downloaded the file and it is jerking as badly as ever.
There is something wrong with the file I uploaded. Maybe I uploaded the bad one or maybe the cloud storage has corrupted it?

April 13, 2026 at 8:16 amMaybe some digital problems occurred during the transfer. If you can try sending via something like WeTransfer, I can check it again to understand.

April 13, 2026 at 8:18 amI have discovered the problem . . . I uploaded the dodgy .mp4 instead of the original .mts
Here is a new link . . . .

April 13, 2026 at 8:25 amNo luck. This time original plays perfectly, but rewrapped to MP4 plays with artifacts, and also I tried to rewrap to mov and it lost the sound and plays awfully.

April 13, 2026 at 9:08 amThat’s correct. That is what it does with me and the problem is caused because FCP doesn’t like rewrapped files or at least those rewrapped by Shutter Encoder.
Anyway it doesn’t matter to me as I only shoot progressive AVCHD nowadays which does not have that problem.
I just raised the matter originally out of curiosity to see whether anyone else had experienced similar problems with rewrapped interlaced AVCHD

April 13, 2026 at 9:14 amWhat I am having with MTS files from Sony camcorders is a little different. It was not like this before, but for the last year and a half, when I use MTS files directly, I have been having super slow performance issues, and it is fixed after I transcode them inside FCP. Probably with the latest updates of FCP and maybe macOS, it is getting harder with those files, and they are interlaced too.
