  • AVCHD FCP 6.02 G5 workflow?

    Hi all:

I will be purchasing a Canon Vixia HF10 or 11 for an upcoming project. The project requires the smallest possible, least intrusive camera and from what I have heard from friends who own them and from other posters on the Net, the little Canons are pretty cool. Small, light, cheap and decent quality.

My question is, how do you deal with AVCHD footage from SDHC cards with FCP? I mostly shoot P2 so I am totally familiar with the P2 workflow. What I am not familiar with are ProRes 422 and ingesting and dealing with AVCHD video.

    1. I have a dual 2.3Ghz G5 PPC. 4GB Ram, FCP 6.02, Aja Kona 3, 8 drive 4TB Sata RAID.
    2. How do you ingest AVCHD footage? Is it through log and transfer like P2?
    3. What does FCP bring the AVCHD footage in as? Converts it to Pro Res 422 automatically? Or do you have to bring it in a Apple Intermediate Codec or can I/should I bring it in as DVCProHD codec?
    4. Will my antique dual 2.3Ghz handle straight editing (NOT capturing obviously because it is from card) with ProRes 422 okay?

There will be no compositing, layering or anything fancy with the AVCHD footage, straight cuts and dissolves, but we do want to have the ability to output a quality HDCAM SR or D5 master for broadcast delivery. The Canon will shoot AVCHD 1920 x 1080, probably mostly shot in their version of 24p and 30p, which I believe is embedded in a 1080 60i stream.

If anyone has experience in dealing with AVCHD with an older G5 and outputting broadcast masters, please post your experience and what you know about the questions listed above.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    2. You use log and transfer. The process transcodes the media to either ProRes or Apple Intermediate. You’ll probably want to use ProRes. You can select the codec in the gear popup on the upper right of the L&T clips panel.

    4. It’s getting pretty marginal. I have not had experience with G5s for a while. Maybe time to get an Intel machine. Certainly the consumer apps iMovie and FCE now require Intel machines to ingest AVCHD. I suspect in the next iteration of FCP that may also be true of a lot of features.

    All the best,

    Tom

I don’t think the G5 will be able to do this. I have tried converting AVCHD using my Dual 2.0 G5 and it wouldn’t do it. The ProRes conversion in this case requires an Intel mac, if you want to use Log and Transfer.

Your other option is to use VOLTAIC to do the conversion…And yes, it is SLOW.

    Hi Tom:

I do have an MBP dual 2.2Ghz so I guess I could use that to ingest/convert in FCP, then transfer the media over to the G5?

Perhaps I need to run some tests with my G5 and how it handles ProRes. I do have fast drives, my RAID benchmarks at around 400-450mbps but my dual 2.3Ghz PPC CPU is outdated and slow. The MBP is my writing, travel computer, while the G5 is back in the bay with the RAID and Kona and two Dell 24″ monitors so it is better setup for editing. Ughh, really don’t want to drop $4k on a new CPU until I sell one of our series, they just outdate themselves so quickly after you buy them. My new maxim is to “wait until the last possible” minute with digital electronics. That’s even why I am waiting on the HF11. CES is this week, Canon may update the models in the consumer line so I might as well wait and see what happens. The project doesn’t shoot until May.

Same issue with my still stuff, bought my Nikon D300, then two weeks later the D90 hits, I would have probably been okay with the D90 instead but I had a paying project that required the frame rate of the D300, so I bought it. Great camera, but almost twice the cost of the D90 and the D90 images are about the same.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Hi Shane:

What if I used my MBP dual 2.2 Ghz to ingest and convert, then transferred the media to the RAID and the G5. Would the G5 have the horsepower to just edit with Pro Res 422, if I have a pretty fast SATA RAID? It benchmarks at around 450mbps average with a half full RAID.

Just trying to figure out if I have to buy a new MacPro for this project. I suppose I could edit on my MBP, but I hate editing on laptops, I much prefer the G5, dual Dell 24″, Kona 3, etc.

Thanks for the words of wisdom.

Oh yeah. I edited ProRes with my Dual 2.0 on an eSATA drive. Works fine. It’s just importing it that is the tricky part.

Thanks Shane! So at least it sounds if I have a viable work flow without having to shell out $4,000.00 for a new Mac Pro.

    I really appreciate your advice.
