I was using Corel Videostudio, but it is not up to the current task – hence I have a trial version of Vegas Pro. All that I want to do is edit some AVCHDlite footage – simple edits, then burn an AVCHD disk to use my standadrd DVD stock and my blu-ray player.

Vegas recognises the clip properties correctly (1280×720 50fps) and allows me to build a project and edit it correctly. However, outputing to a useful format is where (I think) I am falling down. Ideally to minimise editing I would like a project template which is the same as my clip properties (and I can get close I think), but then I need to either Burn an AVCHD disk (cannot find its template) or Render As the same properties as the clips to create a new AVCHD file which I then use another program to burn.

Has anyone else already done this, and if so what are the necessary steps to get it done?

    Many thanks,

ps my clip source is AVCHDlite from a Panasonic TZ7

Vegas Pro does not have a template for 720p AVCHD but you can probably make one by modifying a Sony AVC MP4 template. DVD Architect will burn a 720p Blu-ray (you can select it in the project properties) so that’s not a problem.

John, thanks for the reply. As you can guess I am new to Vegas, and have just learned (as a result of your reply) that DVD Architect is yet another product! Before I download it a few questions:
    1. There is no mention in the product blurb that DVD Architect will create AVCHD disks
    2. You mentioned 720p blu-ray, but its 720p AVCHD that I need
    3. If DVD Architect will do the job exactly how do I get my project out of Vegas (currently in AVCHD form) and into DVD architect without a horrendous amount of transcoding?

    > 1. There is no mention in the product blurb that DVD Architect will create AVCHD disks

What do you mean by “AVCHD disk“? There are DVD’s and there are Blu-ray discs. I’ve never heard of an AVCHD disk. What type of player do you watch this in? Please explain what you meant.

    > 2. You mentioned 720p blu-ray, but its 720p AVCHD that I need

Yes, Blu-ray is a disc format and it supports playing 720p AVCHD video. This is like DVD supports MPEG2… Blu-ray discs can have either MPEG2 or AVCHD content. Most people will want to print their AVCHD to Blu-ray which is why DVD Architect supports it.

There is no way to get your project out of Vegas with performing a render. If all your edits were straight cuts with no other alterations (i.e, FX), Vegas Pro 9.0 will smart render in that it will simply copy the source to target unchanged. Otherwise all of your edits will need to be rendered to create new frames with the FX you have applied.

You should render your project using an AVCHD template that is closest to your source. Vegas only supports AVCHD templates at 1920x1080i and 1440x1080i. You will need to create your own. I would start with the Sony AVC render type using the Internet 16:9 HD 30p template and raise the bitrate to match your source files. This seems to be the closest to your original camera footage.

Note: This is just a guess. My AVCHD camera shoots 1920x1080i so I have not had to deal with 720p footage. You might want to post on the Panasonic forums here at the Cow and see what others who have this camera are doing.

Things to consider: As a video “editor“… I would never buy a camera unless I know how I am going to edit the footage. That’s one of the reason’s I bought a Sony CX12 (‘cuz I already knew people were editing CX12 footage with Sony Vegas)

    Good Luck,

John, as you can guess I am operating at the limit of my knowledge here. However . . .

What do you mean by “AVCHD disk”? Is a regular DVD that contains movies in AVCHD format – the disk, as I understand it, is created using UDF 2.5. These disks will play in most blu-ray players. The advantage is hi-def video on TV using standard PC burning capability.

The Panasonic utility will perform basic edits (trims only) and stitch clips together them produce such a disk relatively quickly on my system. All I want to do is perform a few more advanced edits (transitions, titles, reverses, and slow motions) then produce the same disk type. However, that is proving very difficult for a novice on Vegas.

I will look in the Panasonic section for some possible alternative clues – good idea, thanks.

    Paul.

Then you want to author a Blu-ray disc with DVD Architect and burn it to DVD media instead of a Blu-ray disc.

    John–

Will Vegas Pro 8 do this as well? I am working with AVCHD footage from a Canon 5DMk2 and would like to smart-render a cuts-only project.

    Thanks,

    > Will Vegas Pro 8 do this as well?

No, Vegas Pro 8.0 does not smart render AVCHD. You need Vegas Pro 9.0 for this feature.

    > I am working with AVCHD footage from a Canon 5DMk2 and would like to smart-render a cuts-only project.

The Canon 5DMk2 does not shoot AVCHD so it wouldn’t work in Vegas Pro 9.0 either. The Canon 5DMk2 shoots H.264 but it does not comply with the AVCHD standard.
