AVCHD Archiving
There is a lot of talk about AVCHD and MTS files, and the need to keep your directory structure in tact. Many of us have found the hard way you can’t simply copy some of the files to your hard drive before using log and transfer, even if you keep the folder “structure” the same. It seems to be everything that is on the camera, or nothing works. My question is this: How are users archiving their files? Do you completely clean out your camera before each shoot, so that you can copy a small amount onto a hard drive or DVD for archiving. I assume this would keep the directory structure stable. My camera has a hard drive, and is for home use only, and I have only had it for a couple of weeks, but it already has 5 or 6 events on it. Some of which I want to keep, some I don’t. Any suggestions on archiving this footage…preferably in its native format

Using the playback function of your camera, go through the footage you don’t want and delete it. then, copy all the contents of the card onto a hard drive. Back up the hard drive. Then put the card back into the camera and format the card.
I name my folders like I was naming a reel, 091001 01 soccer game. That stands for 2009, October 01, card 01, soccer game. That way later, when you are looking for footage, you can find it by date or the name of the event.

Thanks for the idea. My camera records to hard drive, but I figured out the opposite works. I recorded to hard drive, through the camera I copied to an 8 gig SD card. Copied the SD “private” folder to my Mac in a folder labeled according to the event. Log and transfer reads this folder just fine. I guess the cameras internal copy program is recreating the folder structure as it copies the files across. Its one more step (copying to SD Card) but allows me to not have to empty the camera between each shoot, and allows a backup of native format that log and transfer can read.
