I am going to be editing interview footage that requires green screen chromakey, and the producer just informed me that the footage will be AVCHD 720p. The final delivery format is standard def DVD.

I have experience with chromakeying, but only with DV an HDV. I’ve never dealt with AVCHD before. I’ve heard that AVCHD can be problematic and I’m wondering if it’s even going to be possible to get a good chromakey. Will I need to convert to another format before editing?

The shoot is happening tomorrow and if there is anything I can request before then that might help with the situation, I would appreciate getting advice about it today.

    Thanks much,

Good chroma key is all about lighting. I have gotten great keys off of DV for years so the fact that you will have more resolution to work with is only a plus. AVCHD is highly compressed so I would personally convert it to CineForm before keying. It will convert the 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 which will be better for keying. I would also invest in a better keyer than what Vegas comes with. NewBlue FX has a nice chroma keyer for the money. Boris FX is even better but more expensive.

    Thanks John,
Someone also suggested convert AVCHD to XDCAM HD422 MXF before editing. It looks like there is a free open source app for doing that: ffmbc. This is new territory for me, but I’m wondering if that would be worth a try.

I key my AVCHD all the time. I also have exceptional lighting.
Give it a try and if it is not so good go the CineForm route.
