  • AVC1 codec doesn’t play in Sony vegas 9

So I have Sony Vegas 9.0 and a bunch of avi files with the AVC1 video codec. At first I wasn’t even able to play the files in windows media player but then I downloaded the K lite codec pack it played back wonderfully. I thought that once it was able to play back in wmp it would be accepted by vegas and it isn’t. I tried converting to avi with other video codecs but the quality goes from great to horrible. My original files were MKV and I converted them by using the original avi codec setting in any video converter because as I said all other codecs ruined the video quality. So since wmp can play it now how do I get vegas to play it? It won’t let me drop it in at all. Please help and thanks in advance!

This is a common misconception. Windows Media Player uses different video technology than Vegas (DirectShow vs. VFW) so if files play in WMP it has no bearing on whether they will play in Vegas or not. Also, Vegas does not support any codec in any container. AVC1 is a MPEG4 codec and Vegas probably expects to find it in an mp4 wrapper not an avi wrapper. While converters will let you put any codec in any container, not all programs support this so video converters can get you into trouble.

I would go back to the original MKV files and convert them to the Huffyuv or Lagarith codec in AVI files. Vegas will have no problem editing these and they are both lossless codecs so the quality will be just as good as the original.

do you know of a converter which has the codecs available? Because any video converter free and professional do not seem to have it.

You can download Huffyuv here and Lagarith here. Once installed, they should show up under the AVI codecs in any converter. I know that Avidemux 2.5 works with them.
