  • AVC to FCP file conversion ?

    Hi there,
I am receiving files from a client using the AVC codec in an mp4 container. The files play fine in VLC on my G4 DP. look good in fact but I cannot get them into FCP at all.
I usually use MPEG Streamclip which never lets me down, until now.
FFMpeg also returns a not valid file message. So far the only way I’ve found to do this is play using VLC and transcode the stream. Problem is the resultant footage is very jerky and the audio is miles out of sync.
Anybody got any suggestions as to a way to quickly transfer this footage into something that we can use?
BTW Compressor probably isn’t the answer because it is so slow. this is News footage and if we cant do it in close to real time then we cant do it at all.

Here’s the detail of the file from Media Info Mac:

What can you do? Either you use a software transcoder like Compressor or Squeeze with presets for editing formats or you find a way to play it out through a hardware card such as Kona and record the result. If it opens in Quicktime Pro, try just saving it as a QT movie. Or even try simply changing the filename extension to “.mov.” Is your Quicktime the latest version?

I just filmed some test footage with a camera using the AVC HD codec, and you have to use Log and Transfer to import it. Make sure you choose the outside folder with all the extra folders of metadata and streams so FCP can pull it all together.
