AVC Intra (ProRes or Native)
Hi-
Just starting to work with AVC Intra codec and was wondering what the best flow is….
If I am going to cut AVC Intra footage in a ProRes(HQ) sequence, in the Log & Transfer window should I bring the clips in via the ProRes selection or Native? Pluses or minuses?

Native means smaller file sizes…but there are no sequence settings for native. You’d have to edit in a ProRes timeline. Drawback is that you will have a green render bar and the quality will be lower until you render, but you save space on the drive. ProRes is better, there are settings for that, but it eats up more drive space.
Give and take. I prefer to import as ProRes Proxy if I have a large project, then media manage the project and reimport only the clips used in the cut at full ProRes HQ. Or if you have the space and it is a smaller project, bring things in ProRes from the start.

I use AVC-I native, then edit in a ProResHQ timeline.
I also use MXF4mac QT Import to edit the MXF files natively. There’s no log and transfer and no transcoding. I then edit in a ProResHQ timeline. I use P2 Flow to edit and then transfer the metadata (and media) over to FCP. MXF4mac is also working an an AVC-I encoder.

If I need a QT workflow, then I still use the AVC-I native. I can get to the edit faster with AVC-I. The transcode to ProRes process takes a long time.
