    Hi all,

I’ve been having a problem in that periodically FCP crashes. When we open the last version from the autosave vault it needs reconnecting, even though the location of the media hasn’t changed. After reconnecting the whole sequence needs re-rendering. It’s an HD project of 70 minutes long and this is a bit of a killer.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Obviously we’re trying to do a manual save as often as possible now.

    Thanks in advance.

    John,

Let me get this straight. You’re asking us for advice on how to fix a broken backup system that’s designed to safeguard your broken main system, and you’re not even trying to fix the main system?

Sorry, but I understand that forging ahead with creativity may seem like a good thing, but it’s not. You need to stop moving forward with your edit and find the root cause of the main issue that got you into this situation, otherwise you’re just digging a deeper hole.

    Well thanks,

I guess you’re referring to the FCP crash as the broken main system.

It seems to crash when under RAM pressure. It’s a large sequence in HD. Not doing it all the time, just 3 or four times a day, which I would say is more or less par for the course in FCP with a heavy project in HD. But maybe not.

I was hoping someone would have seen the autosave problem before. We’re actually delivering the programme tomorrow. Be good to know for the future in any case. If we remember to save often it’s not so bad.

Try moving just the main sequence(s) to a brand new project and see what happens.

With regard to the relinking issues, that typically relates to bad logging practices such as illegal characters, files named untitled, bad reel numbers and/or no reel numbers.

[John McMullin] “Not doing it all the time, just 3 or four times a day”

I would hate to know what you mean by “all the time.” For me 3 or 4 times a month is all the time, and unacceptable. I regularly deal with HD and even 2k for film. If your system is stable, it will not crash.
