Just to be clear, these two competing plug-ins do not work identically and each has its own pros and cons. Aside from matching BCC parameters in Boris or Colorista parameters in AD, there are also differences in how files are linked. One difference is with RED files, where AD can relink to the R3D files. Another is going between FCP and Avid, where Boris seems to have an advantage in AMA workflows. It’s great to have the Duck plug-ins free, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you still won’t want to buy others. Just an observation.

October 29, 2011 at 4:04 pmHmm, does this mean we can go through and delete all the posts about how one has to spend more than the cost of the app for OMF?
My own hunch is that such “translator” apps (what I like to call them) days are numbered and it may well be why the Plates are part of Adobe now. I don’t doubt we’ll see “translations” built into the major apps. I suspect the Plates will be building the into/out off for all the Adobe apps. I think Adobe’s goal is to have a meant to get anything into and out of any Adobe app to any other app (including FCPX).

October 29, 2011 at 4:05 pmActually I’ve gotten Auto Duck to work and reconnect complex XDCAM sequences in AVID — (with a client’s Autoduck license) have yet to be able to do that with the trial version of Boris Transfer – it will go as far as connecting AMA clips in a bin – but can not get it to connect to the sequence without reimporting all the material again – Autoduck didn’t have that issue

Craig,
You should probably take that up with the people who paid for Auto Duck between June and now.

October 29, 2011 at 6:34 pmFranz, many people get burned by moves like this. It’s not exclusive to Automatic Duck. That is people buy something only to find a short time later the price drops or, more rarely, a paid product becomes free. In this case it’s free probably because it’s also EOL as I believe some have posted not to expect any further development.
Basically we have free OMF export of what I suspect is an EOL product . . . which I’m going to guess is going to be supplanted Apple’s built in support or some other third party developer coming to the fore.
While one can’t predict the future but I’m still thinking the Plates went to Adobe because Duck’s long term viability in the market was looking less secure.

Agreed. Agreed. And agreed.
What does this have to do with deleting previous discussion?

Just a tongue in cheek comment. The real point is things change quickly in this industry. One day people bemoan a $500 solution that people feel Apple should have included. Next some people bemoan that the feature is a free download (especially those who paid for the $500 solution).
Problems get solved. New problems arise. In either case, OMF export is free for the time being.

October 29, 2011 at 8:17 pmI haven’t read any angry responses here from people who paid $500 for AD. Perhaps they are all getting s**tfaced at a local pub! It’s disgusting what AD did, but c’est la vie for those who needed OMF in June.
For the next 30 days I will test drive FCPX for free and export to Pro Tools, courtesy of AD. This is what I’ve wanted to do since June, but lurked in the wings. Patience has its virtues.

Huh? Apple asked them to do the software and gave them a private deal. They sold it at their usual plug-in price. Nothing out of line. Adobe made them an attractive offer and now they are offering that same application for free because of their new commitments to Adobe. How is that in any way disgusting?
Also remember that now they have new expertise with FCP X, which might benefit users who want to go between FCP X and AE and potentially Iridas down the road.

October 30, 2011 at 12:26 amIt’s disgusting because AD should offer a rebate to people who paid big for PEFCP since June. Maybe the company is just waiting for the uprising. Then again, maybe nobody will complain.
Like I say…patience in this industry. Patience that things will turn around and come to fruition. Otherwise, have the company pay into obsolescence.
